Create or Edit a Metric

Who this is for. Analysts and finance leads who own metric definitions. Access. Included for everyone at an organization whose subscription covers SmartResearch, whatever their role. No permission needs to be assigned. See the Roles and Access Reference.

Metrics Studio lets you add a metric and revise an existing one. Both are assisted. You describe what you want in plain language and Metrics Builder drafts it, or you edit the fields directly. A metric must be revalidated before an edit takes effect.

Add a metric

  1. Open Metrics Studio and select Add Metrics.

The New metric page opens, headed with the domain you are working in, for example Accounts Payable.

  2. Describe the metric in the box.

The page prompts Describe the new metric you want to create and we’ll draft it for you, and the box shows Describe the metric you want to create…

  3. Select Send.

You do not have to write the formula. Describe what the metric should measure and Metrics Builder drafts the formula for you to check.

Edit and validate a metric

  1. On the metric card, select Validate & Edit.

The metric opens on the Metric tab, headed with its name and Validate & edit.

  2. Change the metric in either of two ways, as the page explains: Edit any field directly, or ask Metrics Builder on the right to change it by prompt.

  3. Under Instances to validate against, choose the instances to test the metric on.

  4. Revalidate, then select Save.

To abandon the changes, select Cancel.

The page states Revalidate to apply your edits. Saving without revalidating does not put your change into effect.

Metric fields

The Prompt shown column carries the wording the product uses; the Notes column adds what that wording leaves out.

Table 1. Metric fields

Field

Prompt shown

Notes

Name

Name this metric

The name answers cite.

Description

Describe what this metric measures

Plain language, shown on the card.

Formula

Ask the assistant to draft the formula

Editable directly, or drafted by prompt.

Category

None

The domain tag, for example AP.

Instances to validate against

None

Which instances the metric is tested against. Shows none until you choose.

Metrics Builder

The assistant on the right names the metric you are editing and states what it can do: Refine it by prompt — change the formula, rename, or re-describe — or edit the fields directly, then revalidate and save. Its box prompts Refine by prompt — e.g. change bill to invoice…

Version history

A Version history tab sits beside Metric and carries a count of revisions, for example Version history (4). Use it to see how a definition has changed over time.

Because answers cite the metric definition they used, a change here changes what future answers mean. The version count is the record of that.

Scenarios

Table 2. Editing scenarios

Scenario

What to do

You edited a field but the answer has not changed

Revalidate. The page warns that edits apply only after revalidation.

No instances are listed to validate against

The field shows none. Choose at least one instance before validating.

You need the old definition back

Open Version history to see previous revisions.

The name and the underlying identifier disagree

Report it to Auditoria Support. A metric name that does not match the definition behind it should be corrected rather than worked around.
